Video Lighting Kits: A Practical Guide

A video lighting kit is a set of lights bought together for a particular kind of shoot. The idea is convenience: one purchase covers the key, the fill, and the background, with stands or mounts included. The risk is buying a kit whose parts do not match the shoot, so it is worth knowing what a kit should contain before judging one.

The core of most kits is a key light bright enough for the subject at the working distance, a fill light that can be dimmed well below the key, and something for the background, which may be a coloured tube light or a small panel. Stands or clamps matter as much as the lights themselves, because a light that cannot be positioned cannot do its job.

A kit for a single presenter looks different from a kit for interviews or products. A presenter kit centres on a face light, often a ring light, with a small fill. An interview kit needs two face lights and a background light. A product kit needs even, soft light from two sides and a plain background. There is no universal kit, and a seller who claims one should be asked what shoot it was designed for.

No kit with a promised configuration or price is offered on this site. The products here are sold as individual lines with published specifications, and a buyer who wants a combination should describe the shoot in an inquiry. That way the combination can be assembled from lights whose figures are known, rather than from a bundle whose parts are assumed.

When comparing kits elsewhere, check three things: whether each light's brightness is quoted at a stated distance, whether colour temperatures match across the kit, and whether the mounts suit the room. Those checks catch most weak kits before money is spent.
