Camera Lights: A Practical Guide

A camera light is any light that works with a camera rather than with a room. It may mount on the camera, clip to a phone, stand beside the subject, or ring the lens. The choice between those forms depends on how the camera moves and how close the subject is.

On-camera lights travel with the camera, which suits run-and-gun shooting, events, and vlogging. Their limit is size: a small on-camera light cannot throw far, and it lights whatever the camera points at, which is not always what should be lit. They are best for close subjects and fill work.

Ring lights put the camera in the middle of the light. That arrangement removes most shadows from the subject's face and gives the round catchlight that suits presenters and beauty work. A ring light does not travel as easily as a small on-camera light, but for a seated subject it is usually the better tool.

Panel and tube lights stand apart from the camera and light a scene. They suit interviews, product shots and studio work, where the camera stays still and the light can be placed deliberately. A tube light adds colour to that toolkit, since it can wash a background as well as light a subject.

Whichever form is chosen, the same three checks apply: brightness at the working distance, colour temperature range, and colour rendering. The detail pages on this site give those figures where the manufacturer has published them, and the category pages say plainly where they have not.
